Emotion in the Dream

Emotion

Often the emotion in the dream is strong. Sometimes it is subtle.

The "trick"  is to separate out the emotion of the dream (i.e., the feeling of the dream) from the facts.

You might have a very ordinary-seeming dream I was standing in the street and a little dog walked by but the feeling might be something very distinct and unexpected e.g. "I felt afraid that something bad was going to happen to me".

If the emotion in the dream is extreme or distressing, get help. Don't try and deal with the dream on your own. Tell the dream to someone you trust. Find a minister or therapist or dream worker who can help.

Sometimes the emotion in the dream is ordinary and the facts are not:  I dreamed I was standing by the San Francisco Bay and there was a tidal wave, it was very interesting. You might then think about the dream as though it was a movie -- see it on a screen -- and then -- when you have separated yourself from the dream in this way -- pay attention to the emotion.
