Being: the gestalt technique!

The idea is to BE the other parts of the dream, not just imagine what they might say or do.

So that if I met my father in a dream, I'd try to get into being my father and having a sense of me as someone else -- rather than saying what I think my father would say.

This is a subtle distinction that packs a powerful punch. You have to experience it to see how dramatically different the two points of view really are.

If you have a spare chair, or chairs, they'll come in handy. Have one chair in which you are yourself and use other chairs when you are being the other aspects of the dream.

You can shuffle between the two chairs (that helps to keep the two identities separate) and in this way, hold a conversation between yourself and your "father". But change chairs when you change personalities.
